MY
OLD HOST OFFERED ME 'UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH' - IS THIS IMPORTANT? |
Some ISPs say they'll give you 'unlimited
bandwidth', which means an unlimited amount of people can visit your site.
uturn.net.nz itself is charged for the amount of
bandwidth it uses, so theoretically we need to put a cap on this amount.
The cap on our lowest hosting account is 500MB.
In practical terms however, most people
never reach anywhere near their cap amount. A busy website might
accumulate about 20MB of traffic, nowhere near the 500MB limit. For
instance, an average website of 30K would allow for about 17,000 individual
visitors per month. Does your site come anywhere close to that? If
it does, for an extra $5 per month we can quadruple that amount (67,000 visitors
per month).
Although 'unlimited bandwidth' is an
impressive marketing gimmick, the reality is that for the huge majority of sites it
is simply not necessary.
